In the early 1990s, Peter Gilbert was a University of Washington (UW) undergraduate, wondering what to do with his math degree. At this time, the HIV/AIDS epidemic was reaching its peak in mortality rates, and treatment for HIV (antiretroviral therapies) had not yet been developed. Not only were communities devastated by the epidemic, but people with AIDS were stigmatized for being infected. Gilbert wanted to do something to change this.
Congratulations to UW Biostatistics alumnus Peter Sasieni (PhD 1989) was named a 2023 Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and recipient of the 2023 Don Listwin Award for outstanding contribution to cancer early detection.

Fred Hutch will act as coordinating center for a large study of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases in overlooked populations. UW Biostatistics faculty members and Hutch researchers Garnet Anderson and Kwun Chuen (Gary) Chan are part of the center’s leadership team. Affiliate faculty member Li Hsu is also part of the new study .
