The Department of Biostatistics is delighted to welcome Trevor Smith as its new admissions and alumni manager. Smith brings considerable experience to the role, having worked as graduate program advisor for the UW Department of Sociology and the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, as an alumni engagement manager at UW-Bothell, and in recruiting and admissions at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he earned a master’s of science in education.
“I can’t wait to get to know our alumni, hear their stories, and learn what I can do to support them,” said Smith.
“My philosophy hasn’t changed much since the beginning of my career: it’s all about facilitation and empowerment. That used to mean making sure prospective students had the information they needed so they could make the best decisions about their education for themselves. Now, it will mean giving alumni the chance to make an impact on our department and its current and future students, while also giving them support that they need as professionals.
The priority for the upcoming year for alumni is to learn more about how they want to engage with the department, starting with a short survey. Then insights from the survey will be used to build a road map to support alumni needs.
“The survey is the first step down a long path of formulating a plan that will provide many opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and collaboration with the Department of Biostatistics,” said Smith, whose committed to helping alumni the way he’s been helped over the years.
“Everywhere I’ve gone in higher education, whether that was as a student or staff, I’ve had great people checking in on me, lifting me up, and sharing their knowledge. I want to be that person to as many people throughout my career as I possibly can.”
