Pre-Application Review Service

The departments of Statistics and Biostatistics at University of Washington are firmly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. To this end, during the academic year 2024-2025, we are running the pre-application review service (PARS) initiative to provide support and mentorship to PhD applicants from historically marginalized groups, including but not limited to racial and ethnic minorities, women and non-binary students, first-generation students, indigenous students, LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, and students from low-income families.

Current UW statistics and biostatistics PhD students will review and provide feedback on a prospective applicant's statement of purpose, personal statement, and resume or curriculum vitae (CV). The process is open to students applying to any graduate program in Statistics or Biostatistics, whether at UW or any other U.S. university.

We intend to offer feedback to as many applicants as possible. However, in the case of high demand, we will prioritize applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are a prospective PhD student and want to participate in PARS, you can submit your complete first draft application materials through this form by November 10, 2024 (11:59 pm PT). PARS volunteers aim to provide feedback within two weeks of submission and by November 27, 2024 (11:59 pm PT) at the latest. Submitting to PARS does not guarantee feedback, as we may close this form early if volunteer feedback capacity is reached. Applicants will be notified if the feedback capacity is reached.

Applying to PARS does not guarantee admission to the Statistics or Biostatistics PhD program and is entirely separate from the admission process. Participating in PARS does not obligate you to apply to graduate studies at the University of Washington. Participation in PARS or information submitted to the program will not be shared with the admissions committee or faculty. Information will be aggregated and anonymized to evaluate the impact of this program, but individual responses will not be used.
